Description: The medieval philosopher St. Thomas Aquinas said that those guilty of the vice of envy take "pleasure at another's misfortune." Italian writer Dante characterized the envious as "sinners [who] have their eyes sewn shut because they enjoyed watching others brought low." Envy has led to murder, revolution and even the fall of empires.
Your job: Give an example of a character from A Christmas Carol that has this particular vice. Provide nitty gritty detail from the story that provides evidence to support your judgement of this character.

A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens, is an interesting book. (Even though I've seen many different versions on tv.) Well, the reason I think that Scrooge is such a "scrooge," is because I think that he is incredibly envious. He is envious of all of the other townspeople. People who have warm homes, good food to eat, and most importantly, a family to be around and to celebrate the holidays. I think that Scrooge was quite envious, but soon, all that envy confided inside of him, bursted with anonomous rage. All of that enraged envy then converted into an almost dispicible, undestructable hatred for the holidays. (Christmas, probably others too.) As when he was young, he longed for a compationate family, as he had seen during Christmas time with all the other families who were together. Scrooge's pure emotions had turned into envy, and then into hatred.
After reading the majority of the book "A Christmas Carol", I believe that the most envious character in the reading would be Scrooge. My reasoning for this is that he is always hoping he could have what other people have obtained in there lives. Such as a nice home, good food, and also people that love him. Having people that love you and care for you is one of the most important things an inividual could receive in his/her lifetime. Scrooge had had love as a child as he was part of a caring family. Although eventually he started to show envy and eventually greediness and hatred.
Acarter1--thanks for a great post.

In this story, "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens has several characters with horrrible vices. One of the vices is envy and in my opinion mostly belongs to Mr.Scrooge. Especially when the Ghost of Christmas Present takes him to his nephew's own house dining with his family and dear friends. While watching with the Ghost, Scrooge begins to envy everything even the goose. All of this is because the way the nephew and his family and friends celebrated their holiday. It was warm and very inviting atmosphere and made you want ot join in with them. But Scrooge missed out and he was greatly envious. Even in his childhood Mr.Scrooge would see other kids going off to their own warm homes and him just being left behind all alone. Sadly, this has been happening every Christmas ever since then and that is why Scrooge is so envious.
I think that the character who best displays envy in A Christmas Carol, is Scrooge. As a boy, Scrooge was deprived of what every othe child took for granted-love. Scrooges family was abusive and neglective. They sent him off to boarding school and left him there on Christmas. Because of this, Scrooge has always been envious of others. I think that over time, envy turned to anger. Scrooge was angry that he never got a chance at a child hood and that all other families could be merry and not have a care in the world. I think he was angry because he felt like nobody cared about him. Later, Scrooge became greedy and only cared about accumulating money as a way to be happy. Obviously, that did not work and only made him a bitter old man with no friends. Everything wrong in Scrooge's life started with envy.
Acarter1 i agree with everything you have said and you did a great job.

You are so right! Although, maybe you could have had some more examples of how envious Scrooge was. Other than that it was really good I enjoyed it a lot and am very jealous of it.
