PRIDE in A Christmas Carol

PRIDE-having an inordinately high opinion of oneself; arrogant or haughty Source: thefreedictionary.com

Description: The Italian writer Dante called the pride the "Chief of All Sins" - the sin of Satan himself. The sin of pride was condemned by the Bible and the philosopher Socrates, while Romans and Vikings made it their greatest virtue. The sin of pride is thought to have led to the fall of Satan.

Your job: Give an example of a character from A Christmas Carol that has this particular vice. Provide nitty gritty detail from the story that provides evidence to support your judgement of this character. Explain how this character is prideful.

I truly judge Mr. Scrooge to have to much pride. I think his pride takes over who he really is sometimes, such as when his nephew offered to have him over for dinner I think in his mind he thought he was to good and rich to spend time with the middle class, not as wealthy, and normal families. Another example of Scrooge to oftenly letting the pride of his money, wealth, and superiority get the best of him is when the caroler came to his door. When this happened Scrooge acted as if he were to good to associate himself with the caroler or even to listen. I think later in the story Scrooge will learn to contain his pride and let his true personallity shine.

"PRIDE in A Christmas Carol." In the tale of "A Christmas Carol," there is one specific character that shows much pride throughout the story.Scrooge, is known to only care for himself and is very arrogant and haughty. Scrooge is all about himself, that people don't even look at him wierd on the streets. Scrooge doesn't do anything to make it better either, until the three spirits come and everything changes. Scrooge takes everything for granted. His nephew, his "clerk" and everyone he's ever known! Total cad!

In the book "A Christmas Carol," there one character in particular who jumps out of this book with pride in the exposition of this novella. This character is Scrooge. The definition of pride is having an inordinately high opinion of oneself; arrogant or haughty. In the beginning of the book, Scrooge shows this trait off by talking down to all of the other people. One example of this would be when Scrooge's nephew arrives at Scrooge's home to say merry Christmas and invite him to his house for Christmas. After hearing his nephew say merry Christmas, Scrooge rants about how he has no right to be merry and how ridiculous it is to be merry. Also Scrooge refuses the invitation. This reveals that Scrooge thinks of himself as a higher being than his nephew and others who are merry. Another example of him talking down to others is when the two gentlemen knocked on Scrooge's door and requested for Scrooge to donate to the poor. Scrooge responded with no offers and stating that the poor should just go to prisons or union houses. This is also an example of pride.

Namit-- I agree with your opinion of how prideful Scrooge really is especially what you said about Scrooge talking down to everyone he meets because he believes that they are lesser beings.

I agree with what your saying about how later on Mr.Scrooge will have more pride in himself and what he does for other people. I don't think he has any pride in people right now, all he used to have pride in was making money.

I think that Scooge has pride because all he cares about is money. And he likes to be rich and does not even bother to pay any attention to the middle class. That is why i think Scooge has pride.

I believe that Charles Dickens, the author of a "A Christmas Carol," does an outstanding job of exspressing his views on pride. He depicts, through Marley's ghost, a picture of a ghost who has been cursed and doomed to inhabbit the Earth for the rest of eternity due to all the pride he had in his life.
