GREED in A Christmas Carol

GREED: An excessive desire to acquire or possess more than what one needs or deserves, especially with respect to material wealth. Source freedictionary.com

Description: While vilified from the time of Moses, the greed has created vast empires and doomed them as well. Wise men from the philosopher Aristotle to Jesus have railed against this vice, but the 18th Century economist Adam Smith theorized that capitalism itself was based on the vice of greed. Has greed become good?
Your job: Give an example of a character from A Christmas Carol that has this particular vice. Provide nitty gritty detail from the story that provides evidence to support your judgement of this character.

I think Scrooge fits the vice of greed because in The Christmas Carol, Scrooge (at first) can only think about money. A prime example of this would be when the two men came to Scrooge's business and asked if he would donate money for the poor, he simplty replied, "Are there no prisons? ..." Another example would be when the young boy caroler stopped by Scrooge's business' door and started singing for money. Then Scrooge interupted the boy's performance by telling him to go away and to sing somewhere else. These are only a few prime examples how Scrooge is very greedy.

In the book "A Christmas Carol", there are many different characters with many different traits. Although the person who in my belief shows the most greed would have to be Marley. The reason I believe this is because the meaning of greed is "An excessive desire to acquire or possess more than what one needs or deserves, especially with respect to material wealth." In the story the ghost of Marley returns to the Earth in visible fashion to visit Scrooge. Marley has been condemned and hasa chain tied to him with objects that have to do with money on the chain. The reason he obtained this is because during his lifetime, Marley's biggest desire was money and wealth. Which is exactly what the definition of greed states. Therefore I believe he is the greediest character in this book.

I totally agree with Namit6 because now that I think about it, Scrooge is not the only greedy charachter in the book. Although Scrooge is very greedy he was mainly brought up to that by his childhood. I think Marley may have been as greedy or maybe even more greedy than Scrooge.

sc hr5,
I agree with you about how scrooge only thought about money at first. But now I think he has grown out of that stage and he is thinking of others. Examples are when scrooge asked if tiny tim was going to live, and the ghost of christmas present said no, then, scrooge freaked out.

I agree with sc. Scrooge shows greed very frequently in "A Christmas Carol." He doesn't care about other peoples feelings or needs and he only cares about himself. He rejects the poor and doesn't help his worker, Bob, when Bob most needs the help. Scrooge shows greed the most in my opinion.

sc hr.5, I agree with you. I think Scrooge has a lot of greed in the beginning of the book. Scrooge is filled up with greed. He should be more generous and kind to others. Scrooge has a lot of money and how he dosen't give anybody any money for charity or for that little boy singing for money. Scrooge really is a greedy " Scrooge ".

I strongly agree with sc because scrooges greed for money took over his personality and that isnt a good way to get to know the world. If he wasnt so selfish then everyone wouldnt go out of they're way to avoid him in the town. When he learns how to love, be more open, social, and generous to others than his life would be more joyous and hed get the true meaning of Christmas.

Sc hr.5 I agree with your post that scrooge very well fits the vice of greed. allscrooge thinks about is money in the beggining of the book but I thk he is changing because in the last scene he could bear to see it and asked the ghost to take him away. Also he feels bad for Tiny Tim when the ghost says that he sees death in his future. I think scrooge is a very greedy person but Ibelieve he will change by the end of the book.

I Think in the Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens that Ebinezer Scrooge Shows Greed the most. One of the examples of Scrooge's greed is the way he treats Bob. Bob is only paid 15 shillings a week. Also Scrooge wont allow Bob to have Christmas off. Another way scrooge shows greed to bob is by making him sleep in a small, closed up space, bob is cold, cramed, and im assuming uncomfortalbe. This is just one of the many ways Scrooge shows greed.

"Greed in A Christmas Carol"

There is good greed in this story and bad greed in this story. The good greed is when the Cratchits are having their family Christmas dinner and they don't have much. I bet they wished they had more and their own oven to cook in and all sorts more but they are not having to much greed where they do something crazy.

The Bad greed in this story is the fact that Scrooge really just wants peoples money. He doesn't care if they are happy, he wants the peoples money.

In the book The Christmas Carol, I think Jacob Marley fits Greed. Jacob Marley in his lifetime was a very greedy man who only cared about his wealth. He didn't care about other people and he only cared about gaining more wealth.

The character in A Christmas Carol that exhibits greed the most is Scrooge. I made this judgement because Scrooge is constantly striving for more money and dose not care who he hurts in order to get it. A great example of this is when he will not let his clerk Bob have more than one day off for Christmas and he is making him come in early the next day to make up for it. Scrooge also doesn't let his clerk have more than one small coal to keep him warm in his tiny office, even though, Scrooge could easily afford it. Another example is when the two men come in and ask what Scrooge would like to donate to the less fortunate. Scrooge asks them if there are no longer prisons, treadmills or workhouses for them and the men say there are, but many would rather die than go there. Scrooge replies by saying well than let them go ahead and do it and reduce the surplus population. Finally, Scrooge exhibits this with his girlfriend Belle. They were going to get married, but she released him from their contract because he was a different man who desired gold more than her. Overall, Scrooge was so full of greed he missed out an many things in his life that would have brought more happiness than all of the money in the world could have.

I agree with Namit6 that Marley is greedy, but I think Scrooge over time became more greedy than Marley. I think this because when Marley's ghost came to visit he said that 7 years ago Scrooge's chains were as long as Marley's, but now it had to be much longer because Scrooge had been there for 7 more years in which the chains continued to increase in size.

I agree with you, sc hr.5, and your statement of how Scrooge best fits the vice of greed. In A Christmas Carol, Scrooge only thinks of himself and money...in the beginning. An example of this is when the two men came to Scrooge for a donation of materials and/or money for the poor. When asked for a donation, Scrooge simply retorted, "Are there no prisons?...And the Union workhouses? Are they still in operation?..." Scrooge refused to give a donation, and felt that the poor had better "die and decrease the surplus population." However, I would also have to say that I agree with montau1. Scrooge does start to change after the Ghost of Christmas Present takes him to the Cratchit's house, as they are eating their Christmas turkey. At the scene, Scrooge asks the Spirit if Tiny Tim will live and suddenly has a change of heart.

Scrooge is very greedy. Though he is plenty rich, he refused to give money to the little caroler and the two men who were collecting money for the poor in the first stave of the book.

I think scrooge is very greedy he works all the time (which isn't a bad thing but when you don't pay your clerk the amount of money he deserves then your greedy) and is so absorbed in his routine of work he forgets to enjoy life.

I think Scrooge goes along with the vice of greed because in "The Christmas Carol" all Scrooge can think about is himself and money. One example of why i think this is because when the little christmas coroler shows up at Scrooges door, Scrooge doesn't give him any money, tells him to go away and simply locks the door. This is just one example of why I think Scrooge represents the vice of greed.

I agree with sc because I believe scrooge was very greedy at the beginning of the book. All he cared about was money and thats not really a necessity to be happy.

The vice of greed in "A Christmas Carol", I believe, best suits the character of Marley. I believe this because when Marley is with Scrooge, Marley says, "I built it link by link, yard by yard." This quote means that the cash boxes and other items having to do with money that were connected to the chain were items that were important to Marley during his life. Also, the chain was very long, meaning that he cared about money for a very long time. The reason that the chain has to do with greed is because greed is excessive or rapacious desire, esp. for wealth or possessions. Therefore, this definition shows that Marley was greedy when it came to money during his lifetime, and wanted very much of it.

I agree with Macam1 about how Scrooge fits the vice of greed the best. At the beginning of the book the only thing that he cares about is money. Scrooge also only pays his clerk Bob Cratchit, 15 shillings a week. He didn’t even give money to a poor caroler who came to sing for him.

No, I don't think greed has become good. I think the charachter who shows greed the most in a Christmas Carol is Scrooge. An example of him being greedy is when the men come to his office in Stave 1 asking money for the poor. Scrooge sends them away and tells them that he will not give money to the poor. This is why I think Scrooge is a greedy charachter.

I bileve that scrooge is geedy for many reasons. He only thinks of himself and might eat so little to save him money. Also, in the bok Dickens says he even took the money from his dead friend ( took to gold coins), even though he already has so much. He could of also gone to his nephews feast, but he declined. This is why scrooge is greedy.

I agree with all of you marley was just as bad as scrooge. Also, scrooge did so much bad greedy things.

I think Jacob Marley showed greed in this story. During his lifetime he only cared about making money and becoming rich. When he returned as a ghost in the story he was chained. His chain was made of things that dealt with money that he made during his lifetime which consisted of cashboxes, deeds and other things. This is why I think Marley showed greed.

Scroog is very greedy. He shows this greed at the very begginning of the the book when the two business men walked in and asked for some money to help the poor and needy out for the holidays. All Scroog relplied was "Are there no prisons?" In saying this he was implying that the poor should just be thrown in prison and he should be left alone. When Scoog does this it really shows how greedy he is.

I think that scrooge is in the vice of greed. I think this because he is very mean and keeps all his money to himself. In the book it even says that he barely pays his co-worker anything. Scrooge pays him enough to only get a goose for chrismas. This is why I think that Scrooge is best suited for the vice of greed. Later on in the story he overcomes his greed and turns in to a giving loving person. Scrooge does this by giving to the poor and paying his co-worker more money than he's ever paid him before. This is how I know that he changed into a loving and giving person.

Scrooge is a very greedy man at the beginning of the story. An example of Scrooge's stinginess is how he lets his Clerk have just one scoop of coal. Another example is when he refuses to donate the money to the man collecting money for the needy. One more example is turning away the caroler. That is a couple of examples of why scrooge is greedy.

I think that Scrooge is the best fitting of greed in the novel A Christmas Carol. I think this because many times in the book it shows Scrooge's greed. For example, when the volunteer comes to Scrooge asking him if he wants to donate money to charity, Scrooge denies him even though Scrooge has plenty of money to give. This is just one of the many times the book shows greed in Mr. Scrooge.
